Sagebrush

Northwest Colorado is a place of mountains and valleys, rolling hills and meadows and sagebrush.  Acres of sagebrush thrive during the hot, dry summers and the cold, snowy winters.  During the spring thaw and the rains that normally come then, the sage turns grayish, silverish green but doesn't flower until the fall when it turns a little more grayish brownish color.    The sagebrush smell is spicy and is more prevalent after a rain.  It just smells good!  The wild animals such as antelope, deer and elk do eat sagebrush and birds will nest under its spiky branches to be safe from predators.  In the fall, the sagebrush blooms with golden yellow flowers.

But the sagebrush hides something else!  Color!
